Let's begin with the most important things...
Disposable Income.
How much does it cost to live "HomeFree"?
Surprising enough two can do it under $1000 a month. Thats gas, food, water, ice, camping.
We have traveled over 15, 000 miles in one year and managed to eat very well, and have seen more than 14 national parks, trekking over 500 miles and still the same weight, healthy and beautiful! If you can work on the road via internet or have a disability and collect benefits, you can easily facilitate a plan.
Some things to consider, where your doing all this. Camping & hiking are America's favorite past times and going off grid seems to be growing.
As we continue to update this discussion @ Roving Nomad HomeFree and in the other Groups on this page, we will share what we have found to be beneficial.
Basics:
Get a big enough ride to carry at least a week of provisions, with good all season tires ( most free sites are off road). Good gas milage is critical these days (that's why we choose front wheel drive, not all wheel or four wheel drive).
You will need an access pass to National Parks, that gets you in free and half off camping, (except Florida State Parks). Having this pass has become more of an issue lately so parks are ramping up entrance fees.
You gotta be really good friends with the Google lady who does the map thing, she is an angel. The majority of your travels need to be in concert with destinations and where supplies can be restored. Google Maps keeps track and helps you to remember.
You will need a tent. Depending on the location and season, the cheapest $80 will do. However if your a full timer you will want an all season running $800+.
If your doing hiking overnight on trails, the lightest tent is essential.
You will need water purification. Believe it or not America is pretty sick at flushing shit in to our streams. Ever wonder how we killed off the Indians? Our water tables run into most rivers and streams, and then to the oceans.
If you like "Glamping" (luxury) then going off grid with solar energy is the smartest. Don't be fooled by DYI's, there is a hack for everything. Get informed about how much energy one uses in 24 hours before building a SG Unit. We take forgranted the cost and usage of a simple light bulb.
You can follow our Groups Discussions as how to develop the best living standard for living on the land, and off the grid. It's always been our nature to roam, so by doing it with realistic means is the only way to go.
*Income
*2 wheel drive car / SUV
*America The Beautiful Pass
*Smart phone
*Tent
*Water purifier
*Solar Generator Unit (SGU)
* Next we will explore why these are so important, and how to get and which are worth reviewing.
